The Pope’s latest encyclical: Love in Truth

Pope Benedict XVI Love in Truth

In case any of you missed it, the Pope came out with his 3rd papal encyclical a few weeks ago: Caritas In Veritate (Love in Truth).  It’s worth a read by any human being seeking wisdom.  And it is very timely considering many of the challenges we find ourselves facing today.

In a sea of moral relativism teaming with things called “love,” the pope reminds us that finding authentic love requires a compass of objective Truth.

“Truth needs to be sought, found and expressed within the “economy” of charity, but charity in its turn needs to be understood, confirmed and practised in the light of truth. In this way, not only do we do a service to charity enlightened by truth, but we also help give credibility to truth, demonstrating its persuasive and authenticating power in the practical setting of social living. This is a matter of no small account today, in a social and cultural context which relativizes truth, often paying little heed to it and showing increasing reluctance to acknowledge its existence.” – Pope Benedict XVI

Fr. Barron shares some great thoughts in the video below:

I agree with him that some of it did not sound like Pope Benedict.  I’ve read a number of Ratzinger books and there are definitely parts of this encyclical, as Fr. Barron mentioned, that just don’t seem to fit.  I’ve read a number of other commentaries that said something similar.  Interesting.  But overall it’s a great encyclical with lots to soak up and reflect on!

Here’s a link with some Interesting commentary that reflects my personal initial reaction to Caritas In Veritate (having read a lot of Benedict XVI)…and I was largely ignorant to the history and process highlighted in this link. Interesting back story…
