On Being Catholic

Have you ever gotten an answer to a question that just led to more questions? And then you got answers to those questions only to have yet more questions? That can be terribly frustrating. And it can end up causing you to feel like maybe it’s impossible to know much of anything for sure. Or [...]

There are those who flat out “hate religious people,” but there are far more who are simply down on “organized” religion. Religion itself is fine, just don’t go getting organized about it. The persecutions, martyrdoms, conquests, and triumphs all came together to shape Western civilization [...]

Post image for A Catholic Response to the Sex Abuse Scandal

Many Catholics are a bit unsure about their Church these days. The sex abuse scandal within the Church – which has dominated headlines for the past decade – has left them speechless. There is no defending child abuse. And facing the reality that such abuse is happening within the only remaining bastion of orthodox Christianity [...]

It’s an absolutely fundamental question for any Christian. And surprisingly, when I’ve asked most people this question they rarely have an answer. And when they do have an answer, it is rarely sufficiently reasonable. I think this is largely because it is something most all Christians take for granted. It’s a part of the Christian [...]

For as irreverent as The Colbert Report can often be, the show uses humor to actually make some pretty good points sometimes. This(video below) is one of those cases. And apparently Colbert now has an official “chaplain” for the show – a Jesuit priest named Fr. Martin.

Many people, including Catholics themselves, have no idea why we walk around on Ash Wednesday with dirty black smudges on our foreheads. First, it’s not a smudge. It’s supposed to be a cross drawn with ash. However, some of the people administering the ashes are a little better artists than others. Either way, it gets [...]
