In that case let’s just sell off the Church for the sake of the people…no more religion…just money and materialism. That is basically what she is saying No more God just Man alone…this is the focus for her comment Paul Snatchko. She basically states that The Catholic Church is nothing but a few pieces of silver nothing more. She states that the world can do without the Church. She states that there is no redeeming value in God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit but a few dollars. Paul …. pleez.

Again, that is still something quite different, Paul. Thanks for sharing the quote – it’s a good one. I 100% agree that every little thing in our life can be used to help sanctify us – especially trials and challenges.

But recognizing that is entirely different than saying that this video “echoes” the Gospel. It does not.

Something to consider: today’s optional memorial is for Saint Paul of the Cross. He said this:

“The easiest way to keep your peace of heart is to accept everything as coming directly from the hands of the God who loves you. If you do this, any pain or persecution, anything which is difficult to accept will be transformed into a source of joy, happiness and peace … ”

If you use this saintly thinking, Sarah Silverman’s video (perhaps a persecution of the Church) is from God. And, certainly, Sarah Silverman is from God. She is our sister.

Perhaps God is working through Sarah Silverman to get us to think about something, to have this conversation.

Can we see the hand of God even in the disgusting?

I agree with what the Gospel says and I agree with the example of the Saints. But this disgusting, deceitful video made to take a cheap shot while getting a laugh from some people does not “echo” the Gospel at all. And I think we’re better off not trying to equate them in any way.

No, I am not suggesting that the Church sell the Vatican.

But, there was a point in the clip that we need to consider — namely the point that echoes the words of Christ: “sell what you have, and give to the poor …”

Those aren’t the words of Sarah Silverman. Those are the words of Jesus. (And well lived by Saint Francis, Blessed Teresa of Calcutta and other saints throughout the ages.)

And, yes, the Church is a fine example of this Gospel message. But, could we be doing more? Can I be doing more? Yes.

Paul – come on. The Church as a whole is the finest example of that Gospel message than any other example on the planet. Let’s not pretend this thing has a good point – at all.

It’s vulgar. It’s in bad taste. And, yes, it ignores all of the good works the Church already does.

But, you know …

She actually echoed the Gospel message from the week prior. Mark 10:

“Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, ‘You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’

“At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.”
