Quote of the Day: Woman

Pope Benedict XVI gives a shout out to all the ladies in the house!

“Today’s date, invites us to reflect on the condition of women and to renew our commitment, that always and everywhere every woman can live and fully manifest her particular abilities, obtaining complete respect for her dignity…Today I pledge my prayer for all women, that they be evermore respected in their dignity and valued in their positive possibilities.” – Pope Benedict XVI

“The Pope stated this today, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, in an audience after praying the midday Angelus in St. Peter’s Square.” – Zenit

When can we expect the church will allow women to become priests??? Some women might find it difficult to manifest their particular abilities without this approval from the church?

Barb – Jesus definitively respected women in their dignity and valued their positive possibilities, though he chose only MEN as direct collaborators. Are you smarter/better than Jesus himself? You should consider the creation of Your-Own-Church! You will always find some others who follow you, but whould that mean that you have The Truth? In the end, Truth is the only thing that matters…

I certainly understand in our secular culture how somebody from the outside might think such a thing. But if we understand what the Church truly teaches on the priesthood, a question like that doesn’t really make sense.

There are no “particular abilities” that a woman might have that she would require the priesthood to live them out. Are there? What “particular abilities” did you have in mind?

The priesthood, by it’s very nature and definition is male. So we can never “expect” the Church to “allow” women to become priests. In fact, the Church has no authority to allow women to become “priests”. It’s impossible. It’s the spiritual equivalent of asking when Obama is going to allow men to give birth. It doesn’t make sense. Not only does Obama not have such authority, even IF somebody “allowed” it…it would still be impossible.

The Church recognizes all abilities of women and encourages them. She promotes women in all kinds of leadership and teaching roles. In fact, it is a woman that the Church holds up as THE PERFECT model for how we should love and follow Jesus Christ: Mary.

So I’m confused when people infer that somehow the Church is oppressing women, their abilities, and their roles because they won’t “let” them become priests.

Catholic church is not a Corporation…If God’s plan is to have a women as a priest, we would have woman priest by now. The church doesn’t changed to fit our lifestyles just because some women think we have a right to be what we wanted to be, and priethood is one of them. Thanks, Matthew! for spreading the word.
