To Facebook Exile and Back!

bringbackmatt-yesI’ve been spat back out of the Facebook abyss of disabled accounts. It’s quite the feeling. It feels like sooooo long since I last logged in. But in most ways it’s like I never left.

I learned an important lesson though.

I don’t need Facebook. And I’m here to tell you that life does indeed go on without it. I’m living proof of that. However, life without Facebook is very different. It’s weird.

For instance, when I meet somebody outside of Facebook – it’s really awkward.

I mean. Are we friends? Are we not? There’s no clarity here.

Do they like my status? Do they have any comments about it? Do we have any friends in common? Can I speak my mind about Obama to this person without hurting their feelings?

Are they single? Or perhaps “in a relationship” with some weirdo friend of theirs? Do they even like the new Facebook? Are there 25 things about this person’s private life that are important for me to know? Would they like to share some flair with me?

Do they Scrabble? Or are they looking for a fellow knight on their path to knighthood? Have they thrown a barrel of monkeys at me? Would they like it if I built a scarecrow with them?

Has this person – or have they not – publicly posted scandalous pictures of themselves drunk at a party? Or maybe one of their Top Friends did it for them and tagged their profile?

YOU JUST DON’T KNOW. There is no way to know all of these very important things when you don’t have Facebook.  It’s like walking through life blind. So – what I’m saying is that it’s good to be back in the real world. I was blind…but now I see.

See you on Facebook!

FYI – My account was off for about 23 days or so before coming back. I want to give a special shout out to my cousin Phil and all of my friends who supported me during this difficult time.  After sending numerous emails to Facebook they finally wrote me back saying something like (paraphrasing):

Your account was disabled because you were getting too many friends too fast. Don’t do that anymore. After reviewing your situation, we have reactivated your account. blah blah blah

So to all of those other people with disabled Facebook accounts out there…if you know you’re innocent (i.e. you’re not a weirdo, a robot, a liar, or a spammer) then have faith and be patient. And keep emailing them every once in awhile. One of these won’t hurt either. But eventually they will probably re-enable your account. Oh, and if they don’t. Good luck out there! It’s really awkward.

Might I suggest a Facebook fan page for you instead? Seems to be more your style for friending folks on Facebook. Plus, with the changes coming @ FB tomorrow to fan pages, maybe this would be better suited for your needs? Peace to your day!

Ha, I actually just created one this morning as soon as I was able! Thanks for the suggestion, Barbara!

It’s definitely more ideal now that they’ve improved the “Page” format and features.

But what if don’t want to be your fan? Maybe I just want to leave it at friendship? Then what? :)

Amazing – too many friends tooooo fast – that is good to know. That is what brought their attention to the cat – Flip, I think. He suddenly had toooo many friends and then they discovered he was a cat and you have to have a person’s name and picture. I will be careful and tell others. I screen my friends partly because I am older and . . . just do. But I would not like to lose my site and have too many things in my notes – need to move them out just in case.

Glad it was not your faith – smile
