In regards to your reference to Gene Robinson, I thought his comments on NPR were very revealing.

Among other things, he says:

“I’ve actually read back over the inaugural prayers of the last 30 or 40 years and frankly I’ve been shocked at how aggressively Christian they are. And my intention is not to invoke the name of Jesus, but to make this a prayer for Christians and non-Christians alike. Although I hold the Scriptures to be the Word of God, you know those Scriptures are holy to me and to Jews and Christians, but to many other faith traditions they have their own sacred texts. And so rather than insert that and really exclude them from the prayer by doing so. I want this to be a prayer to the god of our many understandings. And a prayer that all people of faith can join me in.”

“Yes, you know I was in treatment for alcoholism three years ago and am grateful to be sober today. And one of the things that I’ve learned in 12 step programs is this phrase “the god of my understanding”. It allows people to pray to a god of really many understandings, and let’s face it each one of us has a different understanding of God. No one of us can fully understand God or else God wouldn’t be God.”

Which mainly proves that Larry Flynt can get a lot of press, and the MSM loves to run with a good salacious story. The day that broke every news program on the local channels was using it as teaser before or during commercial breaks to try to keep people listening.

A bad information repeated and repeated is still bad info.

And Doug, I never once called it the boogeyman. Just called it what it is and we should treat it like that. And most of all we should always recognize the big differences (strengths AND weaknesses) of private industry vs government when finding solutions for any problem.

The porn industry generated $12 billion in 2007, and it is not showing any real signs of slowing down. In fact, some filmmakers at the crowded AVN Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas said they enjoyed record business the last few months.

While understanding that the “government” is not the be all to end all, I never was one to make the government this big bad boogeyman. I’m uncomfortable with having faith based groups being given tax money to distribute charitably, I don’t trust them to not to discriminate. Special interests abound, chances are those profiting the most from the cradle to grave, vote conservative and think themselves part of the faithful. I’m unconcerned one way ore the other if the porn industry is struggling, so I won’t be bothering to search out any financial data, that may exist. Time to hit the sack.

Good it’s supposed to be interesting!

And there are numerous reports that have claimed the porn industry is hurting in this recession. Not hard to find.

And the fact that some people don’t see the difference between Fr. Breen’s “stimulus” and the Governments is part of the problem.

I’m willing to wager that close to 100% of the money used by Fr. Breen actually went to help people. The government is lucky to not waste HALF of it first. And then they pay a bunch of people to go give the money away to people they don’t know and who largely abuse the system.

When it’s done in a smaller community you don’t get all the corruption, red tape, and waste. And you are less likely to have people who take advantage of the system.

The government is the most inefficient institution in the country. The idea that we want them to DO MORE stuff that can be handled in other ways is INSANE. And the fact that people don’t see the stark contrast between the efficiency and effectiveness of a local church or organization helping those around them and a Nanny state spending money they didn’t earn, earmarking billions for special interests, wasting half of it, and keeping alive the largest (and still growing) beaurocracy on the planet is exactly the problem.

I’m glad W is getting a break, that means the USA and the world will be getting a break. Not that I expect much from Obama either. W got a pass on a lot of issues from the media, not surprising, as it’s the corporate media. LF still knows how to get free PR, I hadn’t read his remarks, till I read the here. :) Some one must be keeping tabs on the porn industry business climate or anti porn crusaders are pulling their facts out of thin-air. As I read the quote Flynt didn’t say the porn industry is ailing How does Fr. Breen’s stimulus work any different than W’s or whatever Obama has in mind? Other that the Federal stimulus packages aren’t contingent on having children enrolled in a particular school. Have a good weekend, all I can say the Friday post was interesting.

It’s not clear that the industry is actually hurting. I think they would say anything to a) get on the news, and b) maybe get some money. I don’t think there is any public reporting of what the business climate is actually like in porn.

I hope and pray it dries up and blows away!
