The remedy for Catholic politicians who vote for evil policies is to excommunicate them. Hopefully some will see their error and the eternal consequences and repent. Those who are Catholics in name only may not repent, but they will no longer be able to confuse the faithful and make the Church's teachings appear as non-essential.

Randall Terry is "camping out" in front of the home of Bob Casey, Junior. Terry thinks that Casey may pull a fast one and vote for the measure with the abortion clause in it.

The obvious solution to this moral inconsistency is to never allow Catholics to hold elective office.

Also - these Bishops may have already addressed these issues with the senators privately. And the senators have just continued to ignore them. This was the case with Bishop Tobin asking Rep Kennedy privately to abstain from communion, etc. It was privately done years ago but Kennedy decided to make it public recently.

So these things may be in process by the Bishops behind the scenes. However, there is no question that the level of cooperation of these Catholic politicians is creating public scandal and leading other souls astray. And it seems to me it should be addressed publicly by these Bishops...otherwise, many Catholics assume these senators are "OK" in the eyes of their bishops and therefore their Church.

As much as I agree with Deacon's comment, we also need to pray for their Bishops, that appropriate corrective action will be taken. Bp. Tobin has made a start vis-a-vis Rep. Kennedy, but look down that list: has he written to Sen. Reed? Has Bp. Matano written to Sen. Leahy? Has Archbp. Schwietz written to Sen. Begich? Has Bp. Hubbard written to Sen. Gillibrand? Has Bp. Malone written to Sen. Collins? And so on. When you see unruly children, that doesn't necessarily mean that the parents are failing to apply adequate discipline, but it does raise the question.

So these Senators will all be excommunicated?

http://www.vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p3s2c2a5.htm

Catechism of the Catholic Church 2272: <i>"Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life."</i>

Less facetiously, this is a sad day for America, for those Senators, for democracy, for the Democrats <i>(I'm British, but of the "left" politically)</i> and for the unborn.

My heart goes out to you and I'm praying for American Catholics today.

We also need to remember to pray for them. They, and we, need that most of all. We need to pray that they remember the value of life, that they turn away from the near occassion of sin, and that they have fall back careers for after we ask them to leave office.
